Linking data to publications is rapidly becoming critical in science in order to validate claims, reuse and expand from previous work, and conform to journals and funding agencies policies. Robust data citation practices and infrastructure play a key role in achieving this linkage successfully. In this talk, we'll first present data citation principles that evolved from an international workshop hosted at Harvard. We'll then show how the Dataverse Network project, in collaboration with the Open Journal System, is beginning to apply these principles by providing an infrastructure and workflow that promotes proper data citation.
